Poker Etiquette when You Play at Home

Every poker enthusiast has played the game at home. Some even learned to play poker from friends or family members. Playing poker at home is a fun time where you don't have to mind a lot of the stuff you find in a casino. You get to chat, enjoy your favorite food, and what not in a relaxed gaming atmosphere since you are with friends.

Of course, there will still be rules on poker etiquette when you play at home. They will be more of a mix of gaming protocol and common courtesy. Poker is a form of social gathering whether you play it in a casino or at a friend's place. Poker etiquette may not always be as strict for the home as it is in a casino.

It is common to have home poker games with food and drinks served. You can even have a barbecue going on as you play poker at your neighbor's backyard. As in keeping with poker etiquette, and as respect to your host, remember to manage your space. It's ok to eat while playing but that isn't a license to slob around. Try to keep your personal space as orderly as you can.

Try not to spill drinks on the furniture while you're at your friend's house. If you accidentally spill a drink or make mess, be kind enough to help with the cleaning.

It is expected that there will be a lot of talking going on when you play poker at a friend's home. Part of poker etiquette and good manners is to be polite to your host. You are guests to his place so it won't be that much to ask if you return the same kindness.

Some of the usual rules on poker etiquette and game protocol that also applies to the home game include not splashing the pot, keeping your cards to yourself, and don't give yourself away by your reactions to the action of the game. Sometimes you don't have to be strict with these rules especially if you're just playing for fun. Take note that the game becomes more serious if you're playing it with real money involved.

If you're unsure what to call your hand or are still learning the game, all you have to do is to lay your hand on the table during the showdown. Sometimes a friend will come along and help you out with it if you're still learning.

Playing at home will still require poker etiquette and proper protocol. Sometimes the rules won't be enforced that strictly if you're just playing the game for fun. After all, you're playing poker among friends in a very relaxed atmosphere.
